get to know me meme: favourite books [1/10] — the lord of the rings (1954) by j.r.r. tolkien
I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. And if they had, we shouldn’t know, because they’d have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on, and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same; like old Mr Bilbo. But those aren’t always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of a tale we’ve fallen into?

So it begins…
The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who, above all else, desire power. But they were, all of them, deceived, for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all!
“Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit-hole, and that means good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home.

ten series or books ♡ The Lord Of The Rings
All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those who wonder are lost;
the old that is strong does not whiter,
deep roots are not are not reached by the frost;
from the ashes a fire shall be woken,
a light from the shadows shall spring;
renewed shall be blade that was broken,
the crownless again shall be king.
Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.
Far over the misty mountains cold,
To dungeons deep and caverns old.
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
another meme i won’t finish: movies [3/20] → lord of the rings trilogy
it’s like in the great stories, mr. frodo, the ones that really mattered. full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy? how could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? but in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. even darkness must pass. a new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer. those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something even if you were too small to understand why.
“Not all who wander are lost.” - J.R.R.Tolkein
I miss the Shire. I spent all my childhood pretending i was off somewhere else. Off with you, on one of your adventures. But my own adventure turned out to be quite different. I’m not like you, Bilbo.
